Your Name Is Only Yours If You Claim It
Every day, someone discovers their brand name is taken on a platform they forgot to check. The handle they assumed would be there — gone. Claimed by a squatter, a fan account, or just someone with the same name.
Handle consistency across platforms is one of the easiest ways to boost your Digital Presence score. It signals professionalism, makes you easier to find, and tells sponsors you take your brand seriously.
Check Everywhere at Once
Don't check platforms one at a time. Use tools like Namechk or KnowEm to scan dozens of platforms simultaneously. At minimum, claim your name on:
- Instagram — The default for brand deals and sponsor discovery
- TikTok — Fastest-growing platform for creator visibility
- YouTube — Long-form content and catalog building
- Twitter/X — Industry conversations and press
- LinkedIn — Professional credibility and B2B partnerships
- Spotify — Essential for musicians and podcasters
Even if you don't plan to use a platform today, claim the handle. It costs nothing and prevents someone else from taking it.
What If Your Name Is Taken?
Try variations strategically. Add "official," "real," or "the" as a prefix. Use underscores or periods if the platform allows them. But keep it consistent — if you're @thebrandname on Instagram, be @thebrandname everywhere.
Check if the account is active. Many claimed handles are dormant. Some platforms have trademark dispute processes that let you claim inactive handles if you own the trademark.
Consider legal options. If someone is actively impersonating your brand or cybersquatting on your handle, a registered trademark gives you grounds to file a dispute. Most major platforms have trademark-based handle recovery processes.
Don't wait to grow into it. The cost of claiming a handle is zero. The cost of buying it back from a squatter after you're famous? Anywhere from $500 to $50,000. We've seen it happen.
The Cost of Waiting
A creator with 100K followers discovered their brand name was taken on TikTok — by a fan account. The fan wanted $5,000 to hand it over. Without a trademark, the creator had no legal leverage. They paid.
Another creator lost a brand deal because the sponsor couldn't find a consistent handle across platforms. The sponsor assumed the creator wasn't serious about their brand. Deal gone.
